HOW DO I APPLY FOR TRADE SCHOOL?
DO I NEED A DEGREE?
Trade schools require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to apply. You will likely need to send in your high school transcript as well as any other schooling or certificates that you have. Overall, many describe the process of applying to trade schools to be relatively simple.
are there any entry exams?
Certain trade schools will require a placement exam to see where your skills are when you start out. Check to see if the school you are interested in requires this, and if so, spend some time preparing for this. Some exams are hands-o while others test rudimentary subjects like writing, reading, and math. You can ask the school what the exam is like and prepare for it. In addition, you can look up exam flashcards on Quizlet and/or other websites to prepare.
DO I NEEDTO TAKE A SAT or act?
Most trade schools do NOT require you to take the SAT or ACT, however, taking these exams can make you stand out in your application if you are applying to very competitive programs. Trade schools also generally don't require things such as high school extracurriculars or letters of recommendation. However, there are specific classes you can take in high school that may help you in your program. These include things such as wood-working classes if you want to be a carpenter, or a year of algebra if you want to be a lab technician.
HOW DO I CHOOSE?
Search for a program that fits your goals. You will need to spend some time online looking for programs that are located in an area that works for you, will prepare you well for a job after graduating, and aligns with your values. Make sure the program is a good fit for you by reading reviews of the program, speaking with people who graduated from the program or those currently enrolled, and speaking with admissions counselors. You can also try out a technical/vocational school like BTC or ETC to see if trade school is a good fit before you commit!
WHERE CAN I FIND AN APPLICATION
FIRST, check the website. Most schools will have an application portal, a "how to apply here" tab, or a PDF version of the mail in application. If for some reason you cannot find it, contact the admissions counselor or check the school’s website to find an online application form. Once you complete the application, wait for a response from the school to see if they want to set up an interview or ask for any other information. Most schools are rolling/open admission.
WILL I NEED TO INTERVIEW?
Some schools will require an interview. The best ways to prepare for an interview are by practice, practice, practice. Look up the school's mission, their success rate. Find out why that particular school interests you. Also, think of some questions for the school i.e. Are their any drawbacks? What is the most common student complaint? Look professional, arrive on time, and act condifent even if you don't feel it!
